Single-Phase Transformers

Single-Phase Transformer Made in Germany – Premium Quality at a Fair Price

The single-phase transformer is the simplest type of transformer. It allows for the transformation (increase or decrease) of input voltage into one or more output voltages and can also be used for galvanic isolation of circuits (isolation transformer).

If you're looking for a reliable and competent manufacturer of single-phase transformers in the DACH region, you’ve found the right partner. At Wickeltechnik Langer GmbH & Co. KG in Laatzen near Hanover, we design and manufacture single-phase transformers to your exact specifications using only high-quality, long-lasting materials.

Structure and Function of Single-Phase Transformers

A single-phase transformer consists of a magnetic core with a primary and a secondary winding, typically made of insulated copper wire and not electrically connected to each other.

The most common types are the core transformer and the shell transformer. In a core transformer, each leg of the core carries half the number of windings. The cross-section of the core is uniform. In a shell transformer, all windings are placed on a center leg within the core, which may have a different cross-section than the outer legs.

Due to its simpler design, the core transformer is preferred for most applications. The shell transformer is more complex and costly but offers lower core losses and therefore a higher overall efficiency.

Single-phase transformers operate on the principle of mutual inductance: an alternating current applied to the primary winding generates a magnetic field in the iron core, inducing a voltage of the same frequency in the secondary winding.

Applications of Single-Phase Transformers

Single-phase transformers are used in a wide range of applications. Their main purpose is to step voltages up or down. Additionally, except in the case of autotransformers, they provide galvanic isolation between circuits.

Line Transformer

Used when the mains voltage differs from the required operating voltage. It adjusts voltage to meet consumer device needs.

Control Transformer

Designed to supply stable voltage or current with minimal fluctuation, often used to power relays, switches, and solenoids. Control transformers must handle high inrush currents (up to 10 times nominal) and maintain minimal losses.

With isolated primary and secondary windings, they offer basic protection against electric shock and help limit short-circuit current in fault conditions. They are key to operating machines across different grid types and voltages worldwide.

Safety Transformer

Also known as a protection transformer, this version features an additional insulation layer between windings. It's short-circuit-proof and provides extra-low safety voltage to prevent life-threatening electric shocks. Common applications include toys and medical devices

HIGH-VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS

Isolation Transformer

Input and output voltages are equal, but circuits are galvanically isolated. This adds safety in tight spaces, mobile power generation, and harsh environments (moisture, dust, etc.).

Autotransformer

Unlike other transformers, an autotransformer has a single winding with taps that provide different output voltages. It doesn’t offer galvanic isolation but is material- and cost-efficient with a compact footprint
